Welcome to the San Luis Valley Quilt Guild
The San Luis Valley Quilt Guild was founded in 1991 to promote the art, skill, and appreciation of quilts and quilt making. The guild offers numerous ideas and opportunities for learning and sharing for quilters of all skill levels--novice, experienced, or expert! New members are welcome to join at any time!
The Guild meets on the third Saturday of every month from 9:30 to Noon or later at the United Methodist Church located at 215 Washington in Monte Vista. There are often all-day gatherings which include a business meeting, potluck lunch, and work session or class. All activities are announced at the meetings and will be published in the newsletter before the meeting day. Members are welcome to participate or not with any or all of the guild’s activities.
Beverages are provided at every meeting. Everyone is encouraged to bring a plate, bowl, cup, utensils, and napkin as the guild has gone “green”. Annual membership dues are $25.00 payable in June of each year. After January, dues are pro-rated for the remainder of the fiscal year for new/renewing members.
We encourage members to be involved by volunteering for occasional tasks to maintain the guild, such as committees which include Hospitality, Membership, Helping Hands Charity Quilts, Librarian, Projects, Programs, Publicity, Newsletter, Historian, and Quilt Show.
The Guild has several regular activities throughout the year, such as:
*Block-A-Month or Mystery Quilt projects.
*An annual Challenge, which is due at the April meeting. A challenge means taking a set of rules, theme, or pre-selected fabric pieces decided upon by the challenge committee and creating a small quilt of your design. The challenge is a secret project submitted in a paper bag with your label covered, so no one knows who made the item.
*An In-House Raffle allows members to donate quilt-related items at each meeting. Proceeds go to the guild’s general fund. Tickets are $1.00 each.
*Members are encouraged to bring quilt-related Door Prizes to meetings for our monthly drawing. You may not get a door prize every time you bring one, since guests are included in the drawing to welcome them. If you do get a door prize one month, consider bringing one or two prizes next time so others may enjoy.
*Occasionally the guild hosts a Colorado Quilting Council (CQC) meeting.
*A quilt documentation day is done periodically.
*Charity Projects for the Victim Advocates and the SLV Health’s Oncology/Infusion Center are done on an ongoing basis and from time to time quilts are made for local auctions or other venues.
*Programs geared to a variety of skill levels are offered at every meeting so you can learn a new technique, tool, or product. The guild seeks to utilize the expertise available within the group. There may be additional fees for some programs or classes. Contact the Program Committee and volunteer to share your skills and knowledge with the group! Periodically well-known national teachers do special classes or workshops.
*The Guild sells 10" small quilts or other handmade items at various venues to raise funds that support our charity projects and educational offerings. Consider making a few to keep our stock fresh.
*The San Luis Valley Quilt Guild does an annual show. See San Luis Valley Quilt Guild Show rules for details. Quilting Retreats are planned at locations near the San Luis Valley typically in the Spring and Fall.
*UFOs: The Guild challenges members each year to finish their "unfinished objects". When you bring a completed UFO for Show and Tell, you may be selected for a prize.
Contact for the guild as of Jan. 1, 2020, is Peg Collins at [email protected]
