Alamosa County Centennial Quilt
Alamosa County Centennial Quilt
presented to the Alamosa County Commissioners on March 13, 2013 by the San Luis Valley Quilt Guild
The Alamosa County Centennial Quilt is a unique expression of fiber art meant to celebrate the county’s rich history, honor its culture, commemorate its people, and educate the community.
The quilt was designed by Rhonda Borders, artistically engineered by Janet Davis, and inspired by Susan Foster in collaboration with members of the San Luis Valley Quilt Guild. The quilt is comprised of hand and machine appliqué and embroidery. It was machine quilted by Peg Collins of Country House Quilting. The quilt label, documenting the quilt’s history and its contributors, was made by Mary Ann Sandoval and Susan Foster.
Each block represents a significant piece of Alamosa County’s history from 1913-2013. There is a touch of whimsy to the quilt resulting from the playful creativeness of the quilt artists as they chose to express the elements of Alamosa County and its history that most resonate for them. They are, as follows:
-Top and Bottom Banners: Mount Blanca, Sand Dunes and the Rio Grande (Janet Davis).
-Sunbursts and lettering (Susan Foster).
-Center Medallion: Alamosa County Courthouse (Rhonda Borders).
-Ranch/Dairy (Judy Freeark).
-Adobe Home (collaboration by Jan Watkins, Merlinda Marquez, & Bea Manzanares).
-Main Street, Then and Now (Peg Collins).
-Lettuce and Pea Fields (Susan Foster).
-Wildlife (Sandi Patterson).
-Engine #169 (Jan Watkins).
-Sheep Ranch (Susan Foster).
-Adams State’s Richardson Hall (Beverly Hettinger).
-Potato Field (Barbara Rowe).
-Mosca School House (Jo Bowers).
-U.S. Flag (Linda Middlemist)
-Battle Cross (Susan Foster).
-Praying Hands (Susan Foster).
-San Luis Valley Regional Medical Center, clock tower (Kelly Gurule).
-Snippy the Horse (Margrit Thorne).
-Olympic Rings (Harriet DeFreece).
-Colorado Flag (Linda Middlemist).
-Waterfowl (Susan Foster).
-Arrowhead (Susan Foster).
-Dutch Wooden Shoes (Susan Foster).
-Mayan Skirt (Susan Foster).
